Preventive dentistry

Preventive Dentistry

Oral_Hygiene_rightboxComprehensive dental examination

Every year, millions of people require treatment for tooth decay and gum disease. With good dental education and a regular oral hygiene routine, many of these conditions can be prevented. Keeping your mouth healthy will minimise decay and gum disease progression. An effective brushing and flossing routine will keep your mouth healthy and your smile bright. At Sensational Smiles Dental a comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your Dentist at your initial dental visit and at your regular 6 monthly check-up exams. Your examination will include the following:
  • Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Checking current fillings, crowns, etc.
  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays/OPG: These are essential for detection of decay, tumours, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: examining your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: examining your gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Oral Hygiene Education & Dietary Advice

Professional dental cleaning

At your initial dental visit and your regular 6 monthly check-up exams your Dental Hygienist will also perform a professional clean which will include: Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of gum disease.
  • Teeth polishing: This helps remove staining and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
  • Topical Fluoride Application: This strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to decay. You should have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.
It is important to remember that along with preventive dentistry to avoid dental decay you must brush at least twice a day, floss regularly, eat balanced meals, reduce sugary snacks, and visit your Sensational Smiles Dentist and Dental Hygienist on a regular basis.
Children Dentistry

Children’s Dentistry

children_dentistry_rightbox 2Most parents want the best for their children and this includes good oral health.

Good oral health is a critical part of your child’s overall health and their self esteem. At Sensational Smiles Dental Clinic we pride ourselves on the special attention we give to children dentistry. We aim to ensure their experience with us is FUN! Our office is child friendly and is equipped with the latest toys, games and movies. And it’s not just the toys and games that make our unique children’s dental experience, our exam rooms are open and friendly, and our staff have been trained to give children the extra caring they need to feel happy, safe and secure whether they are 2 years old or a teenager. There is evidence to make us believe that a contributing factor in the progression of periodontal disease in young adults may be caused by a lack of oral hygiene they had as children. Those people who maintain good oral health leading up to their teens are more likely to continue brushing and flossing than children who were not taught proper oral care. A sealant is a plastic material applied to teeth, which hardens and provides a protective barrier against plaque and other harmful substances. Pit and fissure sealants can be used on children’s teeth.Back teeth are hard to clean and may be more prone to developing cavities in some children. Sealants may be applied to the back teeth to help protect them.

Visiting the dentist at an early age helps identify any problems in your child’s jaw growth and development as well as detecting any early signs of poor oral hygiene and decay. It is also important as it helps them to develop a positive relationship with our dentists from an early age. Sensational Smiles Dental Clinic offers a complimentary dental exam for children up to the age of two. It gives our dentists a chance to check to see if there are any problems as those first teeth come in. And the sooner your child becomes accustomed to visiting the dentist, the more confident and comfortable they will be to come back, setting them up for a lifetime of good oral habits.

kidsroom4If your child has had an unhappy experience while receiving dental treatment elsewhere, our child-friendly atmosphere and friendly staff will erase any doubts or discomfort they may have about visiting the dentist. Our dentists will take the time to explain everything to you and to your child using words they can easily understand in order to make them feel relaxed and comfortable while they get the care they need.
Crown & Bridge

CEREC Crown & Bridge Restorations

A crown is one of the best ways to strengthen and protect teeth that are heavily filled, weakened or have darkened due to root canal therapy.

If one or more of your teeth have been lost, a bridge can be used to replace them. It is imperative to replace lost teeth to prevent your healthy teeth moving into the wrong position and causing a poorly aligned bite and a possible loss of more teeth. A bridge is an artificial tooth that is secured to the remaining teeth either side of the gap. This will help provide you with a new functioning tooth and a confident, complete smile. Sensational Smiles Dental is pleased to introduce CEREC technology to our practice! This revolutionary same day crown system harnesses the combined efficiencies of digital imaging, cutting edge 3D modelling and a precision machine to create customisable dental restorations for all your prosthetic needs. What this state-of-the-art equipment offers is unparalleled speed and efficacy in the fabrication of lifelike prosthetic teeth and crowns. You can look forward to better fitting prosthetics that conform more precisely to individual teeth structure for optimal comfort and aesthetics. Using the robust and durable all-ceramic materials, CEREC restorations mirror natural teeth and look very realistic. This is all done in a single appointment! So not only do you save time, the number of dental trips and related costs, but you also get to see the results immediately! It is important to remember that even after protecting your teeth with a high quality, tooth coloured crown or bridge your natural teeth will still be susceptible to plaque and tartar build-up. Therefore, to ensure you maintain your Sensational Smile it is important to follow a regular at home brushing and flossing regime as well as attending your oral hygiene appointment every 6-12 months as advised by your dentist. Implants are also an option for tooth replacement – please ask one of our team for more information.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening

Tooth_Whitening_rightboxWhen you look at yourself in a mirror, what colour are your teeth?

White... Yellow... or brown?

You may or may not be aware that over time, teeth naturally become darker and stained. In addition to natural ageing there are some other factors like: smoking, certain types of foods and drinks such as coffee and tea also darken your teeth. Some prescription and over the counter medicines can have the same effect as well. A brighter white smile can be achieved by bleaching your teeth. Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the colour of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. Having whiter teeth is one of the main aesthetic concerns of most patients. Bleaching can be achieved either in office or using a take home kit provided by your Sensational Smiles Dentist. It is important we assess the condition of your teeth so we can advise you on the best tooth whitening technique to suit you and your lifestyle.
Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Have you lost your teeth due to:

  • Severe tooth decay;
  • Gum disease;
  • Trauma or even
  • Failed root canal
If so, you may qualify for dental implant treatment. Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Implants are made of Titanium, which is well suited to the human body. They are inserted into the jawbone to replace one or more missing teeth. Similar to a foundation, these implant points form a secure structural base and act as an anchor point for the placement of dental crowns or bridges. They are permanent placements that mimic your real teeth in both form and function. In most cases, dental implants are just like natural teeth and they are even cleaned with dental floss and brushed with regular tooth paste. Besides their cosmetic advantage replacing the missing teeth will restore your ability to properly chew and speak in addition to preventing hollowed or collapsed cheeks following tooth extraction. At Sensational Smiles Dental Clinic we offer a number of different dental implant treatments. We only use Implants of the highest quality, validated with years of clinical research. Our dentist will take the time to discuss the best treatment option for you. Please ask one of our friendly staff members for more information.
Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth

wisdom_teeth_rightboxFor many people the thought of wisdom teeth removal represents a great deal of fear.

Your third molars commonly known as your wisdom teeth, are typically the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. At Sensational Smiles Dental we strive to ensure all our procedures are performed with your comfort as our main priority. For all procedures carried out we ensure that you are adequately anaesthetised to make sure your experience is one that is pain free and comfortable. In addition to local anaesthetic, we also provide intravenous sedation and penthrox amongst other options should they be required. If healthy and functional, your wisdom teeth can be useful. However, there are also reasons why you may need to consider removing your wisdom teeth. In some cases, your wisdom teeth are in fact healthy, but because of orthodontic treatment they need to be removed anyway. In other cases your wisdom teeth can become impacted, or only partially erupt through the gum in a misalignment. Whether impacted or partially impacted your wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and even infection of the surrounding gum. They can also put pressure on adjacent teeth which can result in permanent damage to these otherwise healthy teeth and their surrounding bone. Sometimes, impacted or partially impacted teeth can also cause cysts within your jaw bone. Wisdom teeth may also need to be removed because they are very hard to clean and may cause severe tooth decay. Careful removal by an experienced surgeon will ensure as little post operative pain as possible and a speedy recovery. Our experienced dentist will assess your teeth and discuss the best treatment for you including any risks that may be involved.
JawPain & Headache

Jaw Pain & Headache

Jaw_Pain_Headache_rightboxMany people experience headaches and muscle pain in their neck and shoulders.

What they often don't realise is that the main cause of headaches is in fact related to night time grinding and clenching of their teeth. At Sensational Smiles Dental Clinic we offer a number of different appliance designs that may be used to treat most headaches and muscle pain. Neuromuscular dentistry may also be used to address chronic head and neck pain. Neuromuscular dentistry refers to the branch of dentistry focusing on achieving relaxed jaw muscles resulting in a relaxed physiologic bite. If your teeth and jaw are misaligned, it can force the muscles in your head and neck to overwork because they are constantly contracted. This may lead to symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) such as severe discomfort, pain, general stress, headaches/migraines, sensitive teeth, neck and shoulder pain, clicking/popping of jaw joints and clenching/bruxing of your teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry is used to determine a proper resting jaw position that relaxes your facial, head and neck muscles to protect your teeth and jaw joints from further damage. Many times, patients who experience chronic headaches or migraine headaches, or other TMD symptoms, simply suffer through them or take pain relievers, without fixing the root of their problem. The pain could be dental in origin due to TMD and may be effectively treated through neuromuscular dentistry.
Snoring Sleep Apnoea

Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Snoring is a breathing disorder, which results from a narrowing of the airway during sleep.

When you fall asleep all your muscles relax, including those that control your tongue and throat. The soft tissue at the back of your throat can sag, narrowing the airway. Incoming air makes the soft tissues at the back of your palate and the suspended tissue at the back of your throat (uvula) vibrate. This vibration is the sound we know as ‘snoring’. Generally, the more narrow your airway the louder the snoring. Snoring is often no greater a problem than the noise itself. However, loud snoring may be a sign of a more serious problem – Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Obstructive snoring Sleep Apnoea is when the airway becomes completely blocked and breathing stops. Your brain recognises this non-breathing and signals the muscles causing a reflex action, you gasp, wake up, resume breathing and go back to sleep almost immediately and often with no recollection of ever waking. In fact, if the sufferer lives alone or sleeps separately they may not be aware of their condition, even after many years. The most important step in treating Obstructive snoring Sleep Apnoea is assessment by a sleep physician. An effective and comfortable means of managing snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is with a unique mouth splint (Somnomed Appliance) which moves your lower jaw slightly forward, effectively enlarging the airway opening and helping to keep it open. For more information on snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and how a SomnoMed appliance can help you have a peaceful night’s sleep, ask your Sensational Smiles Dentist at your next appointment.
